The Risk Of Trading

Don’t Trade the News!
Again, we should always be aware of news releases during our trading session. I don’t trade the news, but I then again I am not a fundamental currency trader either. I do know some super successful fundamental currency traders. It is just not my game. I like to wait for the dust to settle a trend to emerge before jumping into the fray. If, and that is a strong if, I have any open positions going into any major announcements I am really focused on where my stops are located to protect my position if I am deep into profit. More often than not I exit open trades if minimally in profit or in a losing position.

Keep it Simple!

When I began trading I wanted to learn every FX strategy on earth. I found that the simpler strategies afforded me more consistency! And that is what I was after all along. After being able to consistently drive profits out of my trading activities I turned my focus to maximizing entry and exit points, yet deploying simple strategies all along.

Rules for the Short Trade

  • On the daily setup, place a 20-period SMA and make sure that the price is below the moving average on the closing basis.
  • Take only short trades in the direction of the trend.
  • Move to the hourly charts and place two sets of Bollinger bands on the chart. The first pair of Bollinger bands should be set to 3SD and the second pair should be set to 2SD.
  • Once price breaks through and closes above the upper 3SD-2SD Bollinger band channel on an hourly basis, sell at market.
  • Set a stop at swing low plus five points and calculate your risk (Risk = Entry Price - Stop Price). (traders who want to give the setup a little more room can use swing high plus 10 points as their stop.)
  • Set profit target for the first unit at 50% of risk (i.e., if you are risking 40 points on the trade, then place a take-profit limit order 20 points above entry).
  • Move stop to breakeven when the first profit target is hit.
Exit the second unit when price closes above the lower 3SD-2SD Bollinger band channel or at breakeven,

Trade Forex with a Directional Strategy

Commercial and investment banks and other institutional investors like hedge funds. Today, however, there are many venues where just about anyone can trade currencies. These include currency futures, options on futures, PHLX-listed foreign currency options and the largely unregulated over-the-counter (OTC) forex market. Once the forex trader has decided which venue(s) and instrument(s) he or she will trade, it's time to develop a well-conceived trading strategy before putting any trading capital at risk. Successful traders must also predetermine their exit strategies and other risk-management tactics to be used should a trade go against them. Here we look at how to develop a trading strategy for the currency markets based on directional trading.

Margin Trading System

untsA typical transaction amo to $10 million in inter-bank trade. However, it is quite clear that such transaction values are not affordable for a private investor – well, at least to the overwhelming majority of them.

Involvement of small and medium investors in the Forex market was facilitated by intermediacy of dealing or brokerage companies. Medium and small investors have access to the global forex market in many nations, using the sums of money starting from $2,000 in their transactions. A dealing company provides its customers with a credit line – a so-called dealing leverage, or a credit leverage, that is several times as big as the deposit. Brokers providing margin trading services require that a pledge deposit should be contributed, and provide a customer with an opportunity of entering into forex sales and purchase transactions for amounts that are 50, 100 and sometimes even 200 times as large as the deposit made. The risk of losses is borne by the customer; the deposit serves as security hedging a broker. The system of operations through a dealing (brokerage) house, with a credit leverage, was called margin trading.

To put it simply, the essence of margin trading can be reduced to the following: by placing pledged capital, an investor becomes able to manage target loans provided against this pledge and to guarantee indemnification against any potential losses on open forex positions with the depositmargin trading.

Profiting From the Falling Dollar

Taking advantage of currency moves in the short-term can be as simple as investing in the currency you believe will show the greatest strength against the U.S. dollar during your investment timeframe. You can invest directly in the currency, currency baskets or in exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

For a longer-term strategy, investing in the stock market indexes of countries you believe will have appreciating currencies or investing in sovereign wealth funds, which are vehicles through which governments trade currencies, can provide exposure to strengthening currencies.

You can also profit from a falling dollar by investing in foreign companies or U.S. companies that derive the majority of their revenues from outside the U.S. (and of even greater benefit, those with costs in U.S. dollars or that are U.S.-dollar linked).

As a non-U.S. investor, buying assets in the U.S., especially tangible assets, such as real estate, is extremely inexpensive during periods of falling dollar values. Because foreign currencies can buy more assets than the comparable U.S. dollar can buy in the U.S., foreigners have a purchasing power advantage.
